ALTERNATIVE PROJECT DELIVERY

In the mid-1950s, Yonkers negotiated one of the first modern-day design-build contracts for the Yonkers Raceway. Since then, Yonkers has completed a number of notable design-build projects that have benefited from Yonkers’ ability to bring value-added solutions.

Significant benefits to alternative project delivery can be achieved with the leadership of an experienced contractor, such as Yonkers, working in collaboration with the designer and owner. Our flexibility and interactive relationships with owners and designers have resulted in improved cost, schedule and quality performance. Significant maintenance and life cycle cost benefits have also been achieved.

A notable example of the benefit of “alternative project delivery” frameworks was demonstrated in the aftermath of the 9/11/01 terrorist attacks. Starting with no more than a few sketches and the city’s need to restore PATH service as quickly as possible, Yonkers successfully led the contractor team to work in partnership with the PANYNJ and its engineers in a design-build framework to rebuild and reopen the WTC PATH commuter rail facility in a remarkable 22 months.

Yonkers’ technical knowledge, experience with design-build as a project delivery system, and creative approach, combined with strength in infrastructure construction makes Yonkers an ideal design-build partner.

Teaming up with the right engineering firms on large, complex projects, Yonkers has made design-build contracts work for both public and private sector clients. Starting construction before design is completed and ensuring that the designer considers “constructability” issues, Yonkers has helped clients complete some of the largest and most sophisticated projects ahead of schedule and below budget. These include: replacement of the Brooklyn Bridge’s suspended deck span; reconstruction of the Brooklyn’s Third Avenue and Ridge Boulevard bridges over Shore Road Drive; a fast-track modified design-build for the monorail at Newark International Airport; and one of the nation’s first public-private partnership design-build endeavors, the Atlantic City/Brigantine Connector.

Westchester Streetlights

Under a unique public-private partnership arrangement, YCC is providing turn-key streetlight conversions for more than a dozen municipalities throughout the County including the villages of Elmsford, Irvington, Ardsley, Hastings-on-Hudson, Tarrytown, Dobbs-Ferry, Mamaroneck, Buchanan; Village and Town of Ossining, Town of Greenburgh; the City of Peekskill and others.

Brooklyn Bridge

Under an emergency design-build project, Yonkers replaced the framing and deck of the suspended span in 14 months.. Challenged by extremely short night time closures, design-build facilitated sequencing and design innovations that enabled the work to be completed early under severe traffic restrictions earning the full early completion bonus with no daily penalties.

Third Ave / Shore Road

NYCDOT rated Yonkers’ performance as “excellent” on this design-build project where an alternate traffic plan and use of new products aided in accelerating project delivery. Two stone-faced arch bridges were replaced in 15 months in Brooklyn, utilizing state-of-the-art “textured earth stabilized wall panels” that architecturally matched the existing stone work near the bridges.

I-87 Emergency Bridge

A self-proposed emergency design-build agreement allowed Yonkers to respond in less than 24 hours to replace the NYS Thruway’s Central Park Avenue Bridge in just 11 days after it was totally destroyed by a tanker fire accident averting an anticipated several-month shutdown. The design-build solution used a temporary bridge structure and realigned roadways temporarily to keep traffic moving throughout the construction period.

To the accolades and “good job” praises from members of the surrounding community, the Zerega and Buhre stations, on NYCT’s #6 line, were re-opened on Sunday evening. This is the second set of two stations completed by Yonkers’ Pelham 5 Stations Team. Please wish our team a job well done!  Next up, Pelham Bay Park Station which will remain open while renewal work is performed. Read More
