RAIL, TRANSIT & INTERMODAL

For seven decades, Yonkers Contracting Company has built, expanded and rehabilitated transportation infrastructure throughout the northeast. Yonkers understands that working on rail, transit, and intermodal facilities requires a sensitivity to: maintaining revenue service, minimizing interruption or inconvenience to passengers, working safely in tight quarters and secure areas; and coordinating with a wide variety of stakeholders.

Over the years Yonkers has completed projects working for and coordinating with the region’s commuter railroads, transit agencies, freight railroads, high-speed passenger rail roads and monorail operators. Yonkers has a tenured history of — reconstructing major stations, railroad bridges, and constructed a wide range of other facilities including rail tunnels and freight yards.

Depth of experience in working on and around active railways provides Yonkers the knowledge, and proven performance in scheduling work around rail operations, flagging and outage constraints, performing heavy civil construction (including rigging of equipment and installation of structural steel and concrete), and scheduling work to maximize use of night-time closures and 52-hr weekends.

Some of our high profile intermodal projects include: NJ Transit’s Penn Station and the Frank Lautenberg Secaucus Transfer Station; MTA’s Grand Central Terminal; Port Authority of NY & NJ’s JFK, LaGuardia and Newark International Airports; NYCDOT’s Williamsburg and Manhattan bridges; and the Harlem River Yards and the Newark monorail, both of which involved private developers. Following the aftermath of 9/11, the reconstruction of the temporary PATH station demonstrates Yonkers’’s ability to meet an aggressive schedule, solve problems on the go, and coordinate with multiple agencies.

WTC PATH Restoration

In the aftermath of a national tragedy, turning a concept into an operating commuter railroad in 22 months –2 months ahead of schedule– was accomplished with Yonkers’ leadership and partnership with the Port Authority on this $460M project.

GCT North End Access

Constructing a maze of passageways interwoven between the active upper and lower commuter rail tracks at the historic GCT was a challenge Yonkers accomplished without interruption to rail service to connect existing rail platforms with four new entrance/exits.

Secaucus Transfer Station

Beside Amtrak’s busy Northeast Corridor, Yonkers constructed two miles of trestle on soft “Meadow Mat” working during nightly 20-min outages – a feat accomplished through innovation and engineering.

Williamsburg Bridge Reconstruction

Working over active NYCT rail lines on the bridge, Yonkers protected rail tracks to avoid disruption of rail service and coordinated extensively with NYCT while replacing the north roadway in record time.

To the accolades and “good job” praises from members of the surrounding community, the Zerega and Buhre stations, on NYCT’s #6 line, were re-opened on Sunday evening. This is the second set of two stations completed by Yonkers’ Pelham 5 Stations Team. Please wish our team a job well done!  Next up, Pelham Bay Park Station which will remain open while renewal work is performed. Read More
